Part 2

Alice looks down at Baird, pressing her hand against the glass, not taking her eyes off him as a tear falls so slowly from the corner of her eye; the capsule disappears into the smoke filled sky.

The Dawn breaks against the deepest part of the horizon, a new day to set order.

They knew that there was something between them, but not sure if this would even be acceptable. It had such an uneasy feeling, but the fight to keep the feelings between them overcame with passion that fueled inside them. They wanted to be together, they wanted to feel each other, the warmth, the sensation of ecstasy that lies beneath their skin. The sense of just being in the same room together, everyone could sense what they shared when they both looked at each other. Tara grins at Alice as she shakes her head, “Tara, stop!” Alice says rolling her eyes and expresses a quirky smile.

Baird walks over to Alice and Tara, as they are gearing up for another day of training. Marcus and Baird will be giving the girls assigned tasks in order for them to complete their full training. He walks over in front of Alice and starts to explain the drills that they will be performing, Marcus calls over Tara. Baird looks at Alice straight in the eyes as he tightens the straps on her vest, “Stay with me, stay by my side, I will protect you, always” He says to her with so much determination and compassion. Alice smiles at him with unquestionable comfort. Baird gently lifts her goggles so he can see the beauty inside her eyes. The crystal blue color that seeps through his soul, he loses every thought of reality when he looks within them. As he cups his hand against her cheek they get closer to touch each other’s lips so gently, their hearts pounding, the pressure of lust that is ready to explode between them ……….. the base is attacked.

They scramble for cover, dazed and confused as a multitude of bombs and grenades explode within the compound. As soon as there is a break, Alice looks around for Tara, frantically calling out her name. “Tara, Tara”. Tara replies that she is all right and thankful that Marcus had pulled her aside at the right time before the bomb had hit. They all gather amongst the rumble to retrieve more ammo and guns in the locker. Marcus gets the COG’s organized and contacts the central command base to find out what has happen.

The Locust have breached through the security of the compound. The grounds have become over run by the Locusts, they are breaking up in groups, surrounding the grounds to covering any possible exits. Marcus, Tara, Baird, and Alice run through the bombed buildings shooting the Drones, and Grenadiers, as well as trying to survive this outnumbered attack. Another bomb has hit the location close to where they were hiding. Marcus trying to reach the command base through the satellite earpiece, but no one is answering. Marcus, frustrated by the loss of satellite communication with the base, still keeps his focus to protect the girls. “The Drones must of hit the control towers and knocked out any communications; let’s just hope they can’t find the secondary cables.” Marcus tells Baird as he points to another building.

All of them, running for their lives taking cover within the rumbled remains. The girls are separated from the Marcus and Baird by another bomb blasting through the walls. Alice picks up Tara and runs for cover in the corner of the building; they knelt down hiding behind some cement blockades. Tara sees’ Marcus and Baird on the other side, she tells Alice to go first and she would cover her. Marcus and Baird motion the sisters to come to them. Alice looks at Tara and they both smile, pound their fist and they both say together “Sisters to the end…”

Alice starts running across to the clearing, as she looks back, she sees a Drone coming towards Tara. She quickly runs, slipping as she turns back, yelling to her sister, and screaming as loud as she could, “NO!” Tara does not see the Drone that was behind her. The Drone knocks her to the ground and flips her over to look at her face to face. It looks at Tara straight on, as he bends down, stretching his neck and sniffing all around her. Tara tightly closes her eyes, expresses the disgust of the Drones odor in her face. The slime from his mouth seeps through his uncanny teeth as it slides down on the side of her face then drips down her cheek. It seems the Drone senses something different about her, something other than human. She looks at him; her heart is pounding loud, loud enough for the Drone to sense her fear filling inside her. As the Drone reloads, and expands his arms back with an exhaling groan, Alice slides beside her sister, covering over her to block the shot. Then a blast, the Drone’s head has been shot off! Alice looks up and sees a Lambent. Alice is confused, and in total shock of what is standing before her, still leaning against her sister’s side protecting her from any more harm. She looks at his arm, and she sees before her a tattoo. She knows she has seen this tattoo before. Could it be the same wounded Lambent she had preformed her research on? Did this Lambent survive the bombing that occurred at the hospital? He put his hand out to help Alice up from the ground, she grabs his hand, and he pulls her up. The Lambent picks Tara up and carries her on his shoulder. They start running toward the other side of the compound. Alice follows behind them shooting randomly hoping she is hitting most of the Locusts, as they are getting closer and closer to them.

Baird sees Alice and starts to run after her, yelling her name. Marcus stops him, knowing that it would be suicide for the both of them if they went forward. Outnumbered by the hundreds, they have to wait there for reinforcements. Baird drops to his knees as he watches Alice run away. It looks as if the Locusts are bombarding  them, all he sees is the fire from their weapons blasting in the air and dust from the ground as they run even faster. Yes, this would have been suicide for Marcus and Baird to try to save them. Baird stationed kneeling on his knees, putting his hands against the sides of his head, screaming. Filled with rage and disappointment, thinking this cannot be happening. How could he lose her, now, how can this happen. As soon as Marcus places his hand upon Bairds’ shoulder, the communication from the Command Base is back on line and the satellite launches a massive bombing weapon. Marcus pulls Baird up knowing that the satellite has been locked on their marking position. Baird and Marcus run for cover, as Baird looks over to where he lasts sees Alice, he notices something coming down from smoke filled sky, he stops quickly. A capsule was launch down to the same location where he last saw her. When the capsule redirected, Tara, Alice and the Lambent boarded the capsule and transported into an air-shader. Baird can see Alice through the glass of the capsule, she looks down at Baird, pressing her hand against the glass, not taking her eyes off him as a tear falls so slowly from the corner of her eye; the capsule disappears into the smoke filled sky.

Bairddevastated at this loss. He said he would protect her. “Marcus, we have to find her, we have to find them.” Baird pleaded.
Marcus looks up at the sky, “We will, I promise you that Baird.” Marcus looks down, closes his eyes, and remembers the moment, that very special moment with Tara. The strength they had together, the comfort they felt in each other’s arms and the promise he made to her just before this all happened.
